The Mid-Manhattan Public Library Helps New Yorkers Fight Bed Bugs
New York City Bed Bug Advisory Board Appointee, Richard Cooper, will Host an Immersive Bed Bug Seminar that will Provide Vital Information to the Public.

Lawrenceville, N.J. (May, 03, 2010)—The Mid-Manhattan, New York Public Library will offer visitors a chance to learn about the city’s latest scourge as the library hosts a bed bug lecture that will be presented by renowned research entomologist and noted bed bug expert Richard Cooper.

The program titled, “Bed Bugs: What You Don’t Know Could Come Back to Bite You,” will be held on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mid-Manhattan Library, located at 40th Street and 5th Avenue New York, NY on the 6th floor. The event is open to the public at no cost.

Cooper will inform attendees on the steps they can take to protect themselves against bed bugs and which control methods are recommended and effective. Cooper will also speak on the financial, emotional and legal impacts associated with this pest as well as how the biology and behavior of bed bugs makes this pest so difficult to control.

Like many other population-dense urban centers, New York City has seen an unprecedented growth in bed bug infestations in the past three years. Senior Librarian, Cynthia Chaldekas, felt that a program on this topic would be important due to the reality of how many New Yorkers seem to be coping with this problem.

“The library really focused on hosting a program on this subject because a large number of New Yorkers have been directly impacted by bed bugs,” said Chaldekas. “After recent media coverage, it is no secret that bed bugs are everywhere and people need this useful information that Richard Cooper is providing.”

Cooper was appointed to the New York City Bed Bug Advisory Board by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in 2009. In addition to his work with the advisory board, Cooper also serves as Vice President of Bed Bug Central, an authoritative information resource and website available to the public for information on bed bugs, and is the Technical Director for Cooper Pest Solutions.

Cooper bridges the gap between the academic and applied worlds through his collaborations with university researchers and product manufactures to improve the efficacy of bed bug related products and to examine new tools and treatment methods. When approached to speak at the Mid-Manhattan Library, Cooper confirmed that the seminar was a valuable opportunity to increase public awareness.

“There is a great need for education and public awareness about bed bugs. An informed community is the greatest weapon in limiting the spread of bed bugs,” said Cooper. “I consider events like these to be a great opportunity to help combat the proliferation of bed bugs through education of the community.”
